A few years back, Las Cruces received nationwide recognition as being "Ranked the Best" small metro area to do business (Forbes/Milken Institute), and the top area in the U.S. to retire (Money Magazine). Since then, it seems the rest of the world slowly discovered what we've already known: Las Cruces is a great place to live and do business, and the rewards of such distinction can already be seen on our landscape. The number of custom homes built in the area continues to soar and the Chamber of Commerce records new businesses almost weekly. New restaurants are popping up all over town and Mesilla Valley Mall is undergoing major renovations. Indeed, change is one thing that stays constant in our part of Southern New Mexico.

Drs. Beth O’Leary, David Boje, Jeremy Smith and Sue Forster-Cox all make a difference through their work. Each are achieving notoriety through dedicated efforts in their labs, offices, classrooms and homes. One finds inspiration in Arabian horses while another finds comfort in the history and future of space. One inspires a splendid future within students and another inspires greatness in hands-on research.

When Kevin Bixby and his wife Lisa LaRocque created the Southwest Environmental Center (SWEC), they knew they wanted to make an impact. Over the past 18 years, they have done just that by focusing on public education and advocacy that changes the way the community sees the environment.

Kevin, executive director of SWEC, and Lisa opened the center in 1991 with no money and only volunteers. The couple, along with children Tess, 12, and Keara, 15, have since seen SWEC grow to 1,000 members and three full-time staff members.
