Political Spouses

The City of Las Cruces is fortunate to have strong leaders dedicated to making the best better. There is District Attorney Susana Martinez, instrumental in putting an end to child abuse; Mayor Ken Miyagishima, bringing a new type of leadership to the city and Representative Joseph Cervantes who is dedicated to a better life for his children and the children throughout the State of New Mexico. Behind each of these politicians are their spouses – three people who have a heartfelt desire to see others succeed, despite their own challenges. Three people who are making a difference through creatively crafted words, criminal law and justice.

  Chuck Franco

Doña Ana County Undersheriff Chuck Franco is a big proponent of treating everyone with respect, even those he is placing in handcuffs or taking to court. To date, his gracious character trait has changed a lot of lives.

“We will be out in public and see someone he arrested at one point, who is now out of prison, and they will come up and shake his hand,” Susana Martinez, Chuck’s wife and current district attorney says. “That is one of the most positive things about him. He treats everyone with respect and they turn around and show him the same kind of respect.”

Chuck says the way he treats people comes naturally.

  Susana Chaparro

What 25-year-old Michael remembers as a child was having candlelight dinners with his mom, former Magistrate Judge Susana Chaparro. “I thought it was the neatest thing in the world sitting around the table eating dinner in the candlelight,” Michael says. “I didn’t find out until I was older that our electricity had been shut off. My mom made it seem like us eating in the dark was something special.”

Susana remembers those dinners well.

“It was a tough time,” she says, remembering the time when she was raising Michael on her own, working several jobs at a time in an attempt to make a living. Fortunately, Susana had help from her parents Agustin and Socorro and her sister Norma. “We are a very close family and it was always like four people raising one boy. I was determined to succeed.”

  Jennifer Cervantes

Jennifer Cervantes has been many things in her life – mother, wife and educational advocate. Now, she can add book author to her list of accomplishments.

The New Mexico State University English Instructor signed a publishing contract with Chronicle Publishers for her middle grade novel Tortilla Sun, due out in spring 2010.

Tortilla Sun is a tender, magical story about Isa Roybal, a 12-year-old girl, who with just one wish and a peso, is soon caught up in the foreign world of her own culture, from patron saints and soulful food to the curious and magical blessings Nana gives her tortillas. Throughout the book, Jennifer weaves tales of family relationships and family struggles.
