To sell or not to sell…that was the pervading question driving a hilarious solo performance by Ruby Nelda Perez in Doña Rosita’s Jalapeño Kitchen. Swinging in and out of distinct accents as she portrays barrio characters, the big business developer, an Irish priest, St. Peter and even the devil, Doña Rosita is the only remaining holdout for signing away property to be turned into a tourist shopping area.
Doña Rosita’s Jalapeño Kitchen was brought to New Mexico State University by the American Southwest Theatre Company. Recognizing an opportunity for a fundraiser and a great evening, the Hispano Chamber of Commerce included a pre-performance reception for the actress at the Saturday night presentation and a chance to share “cuentos” and perhaps even a few “chistes” after the performance.
So, did Doña Rosita sign the contract to sell her little home and café at two, three or even four times its value? All I will say is that that Ruby kept the audience guessing right down to the buzzer, the final seconds of the performance. I’m sure that if you agree to support the Chamber, Executive Director Rachel Banegas will gladly share the answer.
