| Congressman Harry Teague was elected to the second congressional district in 2008 and is serving on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. Obviously important positions for New Mexico and the nation, Teague’s background will make him a committee asset.
While serving on the Lea County Board of Commissioners, Harry helped create over 3000 jobs for the area and guide the county to the lowest unemployment rate in the state. His experience both as an employee and an employer in New Mexico’s oil industry and his service on the New Mexico State Transportation Committee and the Association of Commerce and Industry will no doubt allow him to play key roles on his committees and in the economic recovery of the nation.
The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee focuses on highways, bridges, public transportation, rail, aviation, ports, waterways, wastewater treatment facilities and federal buildings, all key elements in the economic stimulus package. From the package, the New Mexico Congressional delegation anticipates the creation of 7100 jobs in Teague’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes Las Cruces. Also included are tax cuts for New Mexico workers, college tax cuts for middle-income families, relief for schools (which Teague fought hard to include), extended provisions for the renewable energy production tax credit and renewed funding of the Child Tax Credit.
The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs influences health care for the nation’s veterans, as well as disability compensation, GI bill education and job training, home loan guarantees, life insurance policies and a nationwide system of veterans’ cemeteries.
