To state that Bobby Lee Lawrence made an impression on people’s lives is an understatement. His life can best be described by the word passion, his passion toward his work as a television executive, his passion toward living life to its fullest and his passion toward his wife, Marion. In Las Cruces, we knew him as the Southwest Wine Guy through his blogs, his magazine articles and his University of Wine seminars at the Southern New Mexico Wine Festival. He enjoyed golf and he enjoyed touring on his Honda Goldwing, but I think he most enjoyed a glass of fine wine properly paired with a well-planned evening meal accompanied by stimulating conversation.
A few quotes from past issues of ¡Sabroso! magazine reveal Bobby’s bold and confident approach to wine reviews, enhanced by solid research and a lifetime of sharing his findings. Bobby was a connoisseur of wine in the truest sense and certainly contributed to the appreciation of the product by all who read his articles and attended his seminars.
“Don’t be fooled by the Wine Spectator ‘rating,’ it drinks well above that,” Bobby stated about Sonoma County Chardonnay.
“And now a little tease for those who like to experience wine at its finest level…2005 Symmetry…available locally at the hefty price of…”
In the Fall 2008 issue, Bobby commented, “Late summer and early fall start me thinking about those wonderful wines I can chill and drink on the patio as I watch the sunset illuminate the Organ Mountains.” As the sun sets on the Organ Mountains in the fall of 2010, many of us will realize how much Bobby contributed to our enjoyment of life in the Southwest and how much he will be missed.
