A comprehensive land-grant institution of higher learning, New Mexico State University was founded in 1888 as an agricultural college and preparatory school. Dedicated to teaching, research, and service at the undergraduate and graduate levels, NMSU is a NASA Space Grant College, a Hispanic-serving institution and is home to the only Honors College in New Mexico.The statewide system provides learning opportunities to a diverse population of students and community members at five campuses, a satellite learning center in Albuquerque, cooperative extension offices located in each of New Mexico's 33 counties, 13 research and science centers and through distance education.


Total fall 2008 enrollment for the NMSU system was 31,316. The Las Cruces campus enrollment was 17,198; Alamogordo, 3,038; Carlsbad, 1652; Dona Ana, 8,336; and Grants, 1,092. Enrollment by race/ethnicity for the NMSU system (academic year 2007-08) was approximately 42 percent Hispanic, 37 white, 4 percent international, 3 percent African-American, 3 percent American Indian/Alaskan native, 1 percent Asian/Pacific Islander, and 9 percent unknown. The makeup of the student body by gender is 56 percent female and 44 percent male. The average age of degree-seeking students is 23.77, with some 78 percent hailing from New Mexico and the remainder from nearly every state in the union plus 84 nations.


There are more than 1,700 faculty members, and almost 4,000 staff. About 1,100 of the faculty and 3,400 staff members are located on the Las Cruces campus. In a 10-year span, faculty claimed full half of the New Mexico Professor of the Year honors awarded by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.


Certificates, licensure programs and associate degree programs are available from the colleges in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Doña Ana County and Grants, and the College of Arts and Sciences in Las Cruces. Bachelor and graduate degree programs are available through the following colleges based in Las Cruces: Agriculture and Home Economics, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Extended Learning, Health and Social Services, Honors, and the Graduate School. The Extended Learning college also provides a wide array of distance education programs. Among institutions of higher education in New Mexico, we alone offer a Honors College, professional golf management, and aerospace, industrial and surveying engineering management.


NMSU is a very active research university, with $150 million per year in externally funded research programs. We are ranked 28th in the nation (among all institutions without medical schools) by the National Science Foundation in research and development funding. Our estimated annual economic impact in New Mexico is $1 billion. Anchoring the southern end of New Mexico’s Rio Grande Research Corridor, NMSU is the only university to reach the platinum, or highest, level of service to NASA’s Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program. SATOP makes the expertise of corporate and university researchers available to small businesses.


The university offers a variety of arts and recreational activities. Museums and art galleries, professional theater, music ensembles and symphony, visiting artists, national performers, professional road shows, on-campus public radio and TV stations, a student-run radio station, an 18-hole golf course, tennis and activity centers and natatorium are available at NMSU Las Cruces.
